Performed from 2-21 February 2010, Tower Hamlet presented Shakespeare's Hamlet in five different theatre traditions: Traditional British, Stanislavski, Lecoq, Mime, Grotowski.
Exploring the play through theatrical form and the art of the actor, this production was based on skill and training and theatre as art.
Five different groups of actors prepared different scenes from the play, each working in a different theatre tradition. Actors also researched the cultural history of the Borough and different locations in Tower Hamlets to put into the scenes and the characters.
Development began in July 2009, and included a seminar with 44 professional actors on the Traditions of Shakespeare in Contemporary Britain, a performance entitled Ghost Song Shakespeare from 30 October to 1 November 2009 exploring Shakespeare in different traditions, and a theatre conference Tower Shakespeare on Monday 7 December 2009. This was open to the public to see our performances and take part in our training and discussions of the project.
This work was part-supported by the Mercers' Charitable Foundation.
