Body Minds (2004)

Are Mark and Theresa falling in love? Will her painting succeed? What happened to his photography? Is Mrs Julien, the curator, in any position to help? Lucy, the new administrator, seems critical of the Gallery's work, but what will Mr Constener, the chair of the trustees, do about it?

Body Minds is the groundbreaking story of two ordinary young artists - Theresa and Mark - as they come to terms with their friendship, the world around them, and their art.

Theresa is a black painter on the verge of success, but life just keeps getting harder for her white photographer boyfriend Mark. The community gallery is itself under pressure. Theresa looks as though she will win her commission at last, but Mark refuses to compromise - at what cost?

The play concerns artists' responses to conflict and injustice, the relationship between visual art and theatre, and the virtues of classic drama in the contemporary world. As pressures on her build, Theresa produces her latest and most challenging work, but can she create something beautiful out of everything that's wrong?

Body Minds is a tale of love against hate, of creation against destruction.

Performed at the Gielgud Theatre, RADA, London WC1 on 14 January 2004.
